Pepper and Walter Cruise Essex to Dominant Nine-Wicket Win at Canterbury
Essex won by 9 wickets (with 38 balls remaining) against Kent at St Lawrence Ground, Canterbury in the 24th match of 112 in the T20 Blast 2026. Essex’s bowlers restricted Kent to just 129/9 before Michael Pepper (64 off 40) and Paul Walter (42 not out off 30) made light work of the chase in 13.4 overs. Essex pick up a much-needed win to move to 13th, while Kent slip to 9th.
First Innings – Kent 129/9 (20 overs)
Kent’s innings never got going. Tawanda Muyeye was caught for 1 at 7/1 in the 2nd over, and Zak Crawley followed quickly – caught for 7 at 14/2 in the 3rd. Sam Billings made 8 off 7 before falling at 27/3 in the 4th over, and Daniel Bell-Drummond could only manage 13 off 14 (1×4) before being caught at 30/4 in the 6th. Four down inside the powerplay – Kent were in deep trouble.
Joe Denly ground out 14 off 19 (1×6) but was bowled at 46/5 in the 9th over. Jake Lintott showed some fight with 18 off 18 (2×4) before being caught at 94/6 in the 16th, and Dian Forrester top-scored with a battling 34 off 34 (3×4, 1×6) – the only real resistance. He was caught at 102/7 in the 18th over. Thomas Stewart Rogers made 7 off 10 (caught at 110/8), while Frederick Klaassen hit a breezy 8 off 4 (1×6) before falling at 127/9. Matt Milnes was unbeaten on 15 off 7 (3×4, SR 214) and Matt Parkinson finished on 1 not out as Kent limped to 129/9.
Essex’s bowling was disciplined across the board. Wiaan Mulder was the pick with 3/26 from 4 overs (Econ 6.5), while Shane Snater took 2/23 from 4 (Econ 5.75). Charlie Bennett was sharp with 3/25 from 3 overs, Zaman Akhter added 1/18 from 3 (Econ 6), and Simon Harmer was outstanding in a holding role – 0/14 from 4 overs with a maiden, economy of just 3.5. Matthew Critchley went for 22 from his 2 overs.
Second Innings – Essex 130/1 (13.4 overs)
The chase was clinical. Michael Pepper and Paul Walter put on 110 for the first wicket before Pepper was caught for 64 off 40 balls (6×4, 3×6, SR 160) in the 12th over. It was a controlled, authoritative knock that never let Kent into the game. Paul Walter was equally composed – 42 not out off 30 (6×4, 1×6, SR 140), batting through to see Essex home.
Charlie Allison came in and finished the job with a fluent 18 not out off 12 (4×4, SR 150) as Essex cruised to 130/1 with 38 balls to spare. A comprehensive demolition.
Kent’s bowlers had no answers. Jake Lintott was the most economical at 7.33 from 3 overs but took no wickets. Thomas Stewart Rogers was the only bowler to claim a scalp – 1/31 from 3 overs. Frederick Klaassen (0/14 from 1.4), Matt Milnes (0/30 from 3), Matt Parkinson (0/25 from 2), and Dian Forrester (0/8 from 1) all went wicketless.

Turning Point
The dismissal of Zak Crawley at 14/2 in the 3rd over set the tone for Kent’s dismal batting display. Losing both openers inside 3 overs – Tawanda Muyeye at 7/1 and Crawley at 14/2 – meant Kent were always playing catch-up. When Sam Billings fell at 27/3 just an over later, the innings was already in crisis and Kent never recovered from the early damage.
Match Context
This was match 24 of 112 in the T20 Blast 2026. Essex move to 13th with their first win in 3 matches (4 points) – a season-reviving victory that will do wonders for confidence. The bowling unit looks strong and the top order delivered when it mattered. Kent drop to 9th with 2 wins from 3 (8 points). Being bowled out for 129 at home and losing by 9 wickets is a reality check after a decent start to the campaign.
