la liga most interesting stats

As the 2025/26 La Liga season continues to unfold, the familiar battle for supremacy between arch-rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona once again dominates the headlines. Kylian Mbappé’s 21-goal campaign so far is already the kind of return that would make the Ronaldos of the past proud at the Bernabéu.

With 21 games played, now feels like the right moment to take stock of the season so far. From top-performing teams to standout individual displays, here are the most interesting and revealing statistics from Spain’s top flight, brought to you by the best place for stats, Statz.ai

Top Teams

It comes as little surprise to see Barcelona and Real Madrid neck and neck at the top of the La Liga table, with the defending champions holding a one-point lead going into matchday 22. Barcelona’s free-scoring nature is reflected in their average of 2.7 goals per game, as they lead the league in goals scored with 12 more than their bitter rivals, Real Madrid (45).

The league leaders also dominate the statistical categories for shots, shots on target, passes, and corners. Elsewhere, recent victors over Barcelona, Real Sociedad, can be considered the league’s entertainers, with 81% of their matches ending with both teams finding the net. The Basque side also rank first for tackles, averaging 18.9 per game.

At the bottom of the table, Oviedo’s goalkeeper tops the league in saves, while the team averages just 0.5 goals per game. Despite their struggles, they at least match—or even edge—Getafe in shots and shots on target, but are currently eight points behind them.

Top Individuals – Best Finishers

While Mbappé races toward the Pichichi, he has played all but 132 minutes of La Liga action, scoring seven goals from the penalty spot—but also leading the league in big chances missed (14). His success is driven more by volume than a high conversion rate (21%). The most efficient finisher so far is Deportivo AlavésCarlos Vicente, who has converted five goals from 41.7% of his shots. Strong conversion rates from Villarreal wingers Tajon Buchanan (27.8%) and Alberto Moleiro (26.8%) help explain why the Yellow Submarine are making waves in fourth place.

Barcelona’s best finisher is Ferran Torres, whose 25.6% conversion rate suggests he could be closer to Mbappé in the goalscoring charts with a bit more luck. Torres has struck the woodwork four times—joint-most in the league—potentially adding to his 11-goal tally.

No review would be complete without mentioning 18-year-old wonderkid Lamine Yamal. He leads the assist charts with eight, just ahead of his English teammate Marcus Rashford on seven. Those assists push Yamal to second in total goal contributions, racking up 16, trailing only Mbappé’s 25.

Best Duelers Winners

While the top finishers often get the headlines, it’s the players in the trenches—winning their duels—who can make just as much difference between winning and losing. La Liga may be known for its technical skill and possession football, but it’s these hardworking centre backs, who deserve recognition, as highlighted by Statz.ai

Perhaps most surprisingly, it’s again an Alavés player leading the league for successful tackles, Jon Pacheco has won 66.7% of his duels. At the other end of the table, Oviedo’s Carmo engages in the most duels in La Liga (9 per game) and boasts a highly respectable 62.1% success rate. The Angolan international also ranks third for accurate long balls in the league showing the full extent of his involvement in and out of possession. Among the top clubs, Real Madrid’s Huijsen and Barcelona’s Cubarsi are virtually level, winning 65.9% and 65.4% of their duels respectively.

Other defensive players worth noting include Real Sociedad’s Sergio Gómez, who has made the most tackles in the league (65). Meanwhile, despite playing just 654 minutes in the league, Marc Pubill is winning an impressive 76.1% of his duels for Atlético Madrid.

While not coming out on top of the duels in the referee’s eyes, Athletic Club’s central midfielder Añigo Ruiz de Galarreta has collected ten yellow cards, the most in the league, and Oviedo’s forward Federico Viñas has received four red cards this season—double the next highest total in La Liga 2025/26.
