These are wretched times to be a football fan in Sheffield.

After 15 rounds of Championship games, both Wednesday and United find themselves in the relegation zone. The Blades are battling for safety in the second tier, while the Owls are fighting just to exist as a football club at all.

They meet in the normally hot-tempered Steel City derby on Sunday (12:30 GMT). So can either side give their survival hopes a huge boost with victory over their bitter rivals?

Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United: Preview

Six months ago, Sheffield United were 90 minutes away from the Premier League… and seconds from taking the Championship play-off final to extra time.

Manager Chris Wilder left the club after that relative failure, was replaced by Ruben Selles and, well, it was an unmitigated disaster.

Wilder has since returned but has been unable to wave a magic wand, despite having many of the same players as last season at his disposal. Since taking control of the Blades again on September 16, Wilder’s formline in the league reads W3 D1 L6.

It’s even gloomier for Wednesday, with a detested owner, transfer embargoes and points deductions seeing all their hard work so far rendered pointless – literally, with the Owls stuck on -4.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United: Statz Projections

If you enjoy goals, shots, corners, tackles, fouls and cards – the good stuff, basically – then you might want to tune into Sky Sports’ coverage of this game on Sunday lunchtime.

Although the Steel City derby hasn’t always been the most entertaining of contests, this edition could be a humdinger as per the Statz model projections.

If the game lives up to this billing, it will be unmissable.

It might need an early goal to live up to this promise, but if one is forthcoming then an action-packed encounter – in which Sheffield United are just about fancied, given our goal supremacy projection of 1.63-1.17 in their favour – could ensue.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United Predictions

Don’t forget that subscribers have access to our ‘best bets’ tool, which plots our implied probability of an outcome against the bookmakers’ odds – identifying a few bits of strong value every single weekend.

Our machine learning model has identified this Steel City derby as a likely contender for Over 2.5 Goals; our implied probability of 53% means that a price of even money – available at bet365 and other firms, at the time of writing – is a value, advantage bet.

The match winner prices seem fair, given our goal projections, with Sheffield United the favourites to win at Hillsborough at around 19/20.

We’re modelling Wednesday at 5.31 corners and United at 4.94. Those are fine margins, of course, but the bookies are offering odds of 7/5 on the Owls to win more corners than the Blades – the price dictates the bet, in this case.

A player prop selection also catches the eye. Wednesday’s Harry Amass has committed two or more fouls in three of his last five games. He’s priced at 7/4 to do likewise here.

In a local derby? Amass away, young Harry…

·   Over 2.5 Goals (Evens)

·   Sheffield Wednesday – Most Corners (7/5)

·   Harry Amass – 2+ Fouls (7/4)
