Shepherd Returns Stunning 4-2-5-1 to Power MI New York Past Knight Riders
MI New York won by 41 runs in the 12th match of 34 in the Major League Cricket 2026 season at the Oakland Coliseum, California. Los Angeles Knight Riders won the toss and elected to bowl but were ultimately strangled by a superb bowling display, with Romario Shepherd producing the standout spell – four overs, two maidens, five runs conceded, one wicket.
First Innings – MI New York 144/6 (20 overs)
Quinton de Kock set the tempo at the top, crashing 33 off just 17 balls with three fours and two sixes before being bowled at 35/1 in the fourth over. Kunwarjeet Singh fell quickly after for 3, but Nicholas Pooran anchored the innings with a composed 70 not out off 58 deliveries, finding six fours and five sixes.
The middle order wobbled through the back end. Tajinder Singh contributed just 5 off 8 before being caught at 63/3 (9.2 overs), and Corbin Bosch was bowled for 1 at 75/4 (11.3). Kieron Pollard followed immediately for a golden duck – LBW first ball – leaving MINY in trouble at 75/5 (11.4).
Romario Shepherd steadied things alongside Pooran, thumping 22 off 16 balls with two fours and a six. Their partnership of 32 off 24 balls took the score from 75/5 to 107/6 and gave MI New York a competitive total. Corey Anderson finished 2 not out as Pooran guided MINY to 144/6.
Andre Russell was the pick of the LAKR bowlers with outstanding figures of 4/35 from his four overs, while Sunil Narine was typically miserly with 1/12 at an economy of 3.00. Jason Holder took 1/33 and Ali Khan went for 23 without a wicket.
Second Innings – Los Angeles Knight Riders 103 all out (17.5 overs)
Colin Munro and Andre Fletcher got the chase off to a decent start, putting on 53 for the first wicket inside the powerplay. But Munro’s run out at 53/1 (6.5 overs) triggered a dramatic collapse. Unmukt Chand fell LBW for 7 at 61/2 (8.2), Sunil Narine smashed a quick-fire six off two balls before being caught at 68/3 (8.4), and Rovman Powell was stumped for just 1 off 8 balls at 70/4 (10.2).
From there, the chase disintegrated completely. Saif Badar managed just 3 off 12 before being caught at 75/5 (13.3), then Jason Holder was bowled for a duck at 76/6 (14.2), and Andre Russell was bowled for a duck at 76/7 (14.5) – three wickets falling for a single run. Matthew Tromp hit two sixes in a cameo of 12 off 4 before being caught at 95/8, and Fletcher was eventually caught for 44 at 100/9 (16.5). Ali Khan was the last man out at 103/10 (17.5), with Shadley van Schalkwyk stranded on 3 not out.
Shepherd was virtually unplayable, finishing with 4-2-5-1 at a stunning economy rate of 1.25. Nosthush Kenjige matched him with 3/21 at 5.25, and Corbin Bosch took 3/26 at 6.50. Trent Boult chipped in with 1/10 from 2.5 overs (economy 3.53), while Rushil Ugarkar was the most expensive with 1/39 at 13.00.
Statz MVP – Romario Shepherd
Romario Shepherd earns the Statz MVP award with an mi_rating of 94.84, and it is hard to argue. His all-round contribution – 22 off 16 with the bat followed by a miserly 4-2-5-1 with the ball – was the difference between the two sides. The Statz model, which calculates impact based on match context, ranked Shepherd well ahead of the field. The official Player of the Match went to Nicholas Pooran for his unbeaten 70, but Statz sees Shepherd’s game-changing bowling spell as the more impactful performance.
Top 5 Statz Ratings
- Romario Shepherd – 94.84 | 22 off 16 with the bat, 4-2-5-1 with the ball. Two maidens in a T20 tells its own story.
- Sunil Narine – 84.07 | 1/12 at economy 3.00 with the ball, 6 off 2 with the bat. Strangled MI New York’s middle overs but couldn’t do it at both ends.
- Nosthush Kenjige – 74.34 | 3/21 from four overs at economy 5.25. The left-arm spinner carved through LAKR’s lower order.
- Nicholas Pooran – 64.35 | 70 not out off 58 balls. Anchored the innings when wickets tumbled around him.
- Andre Russell – 63.37 | 4/35 with the ball was excellent, but a duck with the bat brought his overall impact down.
Turning Point
The run out of Colin Munro at 53/1 in the seventh over. LAKR had built a solid platform and needed 92 from 81 balls with nine wickets in hand. The run out broke the momentum entirely – from 53/1, LAKR collapsed to 76/7 in eight overs, losing six wickets for just 23 runs. Once Munro departed, the Knight Riders never recovered.
Match Context
This was the 12th match of 34 in the Major League Cricket 2026 regular season. MI New York move to 3rd in the standings with 4 points from 4 matches (W2 L2, NRR +0.285). Los Angeles Knight Riders drop to 2nd on 4 points from 3 matches (W2 L1, NRR +0.867). With five teams separated by just two points at this early stage, every result carries weight. MI New York’s big win here gives them a useful NRR boost heading into a congested middle phase of the season.
