Powell Smashes Five Sixes as Knight Riders Crush Seattle by 81 Runs
Los Angeles Knight Riders won by 81 runs against Seattle Orcas in match 6 of 34 in MLC 2026. LAKR posted 196/10 from their 20 overs before rolling SO for just 115 in 15.3 overs at Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas. With two wins from two, the Knight Riders sit alone at the top of the standings – the only unbeaten side in the competition.
First Innings – LAKR Post 196 Thanks to Powell Fireworks
Seattle won the toss and chose to bowl – a decision that backfired spectacularly. Colin Munro set the tone with 30 off 22 balls, cracking two fours and two sixes in a typically aggressive powerplay knock. Andre Fletcher provided the anchor at the other end, top-scoring with 40 off 27 including five boundaries and a six.
The middle order wobbled. Unmukt Chand managed 19 off 12 and Sunil Narine contributed a handy 15 off 12 with two sixes before falling LBW. Jason Holder added 23 off 14 lower down, but LAKR were wobbling at 136/6 in the 16th over and heading for something in the 160s.
Then Rovman Powell happened. The Jamaican smashed 37 off just 11 balls at a strike rate of 336, clearing the rope five times. It was brutal, calculated hitting that transformed a par score into a match-winning one. Andre Russell chipped in with 14 off 12 and Saif Badar clubbed 11 off 5 in a cameo – but Powell’s 11-ball blitz was the difference between competitive and commanding. LAKR finished on 196.
For Seattle’s bowlers, Jasdeep Singh was the pick with 3/29 from four overs at 7.25. Ottneil Baartman also claimed three wickets but went at nine an over. Dasun Shanaka had a day to forget – 2/59 from four overs at an economy of 14.75.
Second Innings – Seattle’s Chase Collapses Inside 16 Overs
Chasing 197, Seattle never looked in the hunt. Tim Seifert fell for 5 in the powerplay, and while Matthew Breetzke hit a breezy 14 off 8 before being bowled, the Orcas lost wickets in clusters. Shayan Jahangir made a scratchy 12 off 16, and when Marcus Stoinis departed for just 1 off 2 balls, SO had slumped to 39/5 and the contest was dead.
Narine was outstanding with the ball – 4-0-18-2 at an economy of just 4.5. Shadley van Schalkwyk was equally miserly, returning 3/17 from three overs at 5.67. Russell finished things off ruthlessly with 3/8 from 1.3 overs, and Carmi le Roux claimed 2/17. It was a complete bowling performance.
Shimron Hetmyer made 11 off 13 but never found fluency. The only real resistance came from Harmeet Singh, who swung hard from number eight for 25 off 17 balls with two sixes. Cameron Gannon added 12 off 10, but it was never more than damage limitation. Seattle were bowled out for 115 in 15.3 overs – a comprehensive defeat.
Statz MVP – Narine’s All-Round Impact Trumps Official Man of the Match
The official Man of the Match went to Shadley van Schalkwyk for his 3/17 – and on the face of it, fair enough. Those were excellent figures. But the Statz MVP formula, which calculates impact based on match context, tells a different story.
Sunil Narine earned a Statz rating of 101.66 – the highest in the match by a significant margin. His 2/18 from four overs at an economy of 4.5 strangled Seattle’s top order during the chase, while his 15 off 12 with the bat – including two sixes – came when the LAKR middle order was wobbling. Van Schalkwyk’s Statz rating was 63.98. Strong bowling, no question, but Narine’s dual contribution across both innings made him the more impactful player on the day.
Top 5 Statz Ratings
- Sunil Narine (LAKR) – 101.66 – 15 off 12 with bat, 2/18 from 4 overs (Econ 4.5)
- Rovman Powell (LAKR) – 81.73 – 37 off 11 balls (SR 336, 5 sixes)
- Harmeet Singh (SO) – 79.2 – 25 off 17 with bat, 1/31 from 4 overs
- Ottneil Baartman (SO) – 72.25 – 3/36 from 4 overs, 1* with bat
- Jasdeep Singh (SO) – 70.85 – 3/29 from 4 overs, 4 off 7 with bat
Turning Point – Powell’s 11-Ball Blitz Changes Everything
The match turned twice. In the first innings, LAKR were 136/6 in the 16th over and tracking towards a total in the low 160s. Powell’s 37 off 11 balls – five sixes, strike rate 336 – added roughly 30 runs above expectation and pushed the total to 196. The difference between chasing 165 and chasing 197 on this surface was the difference between a contest and a procession.
In the second innings, the early cluster of wickets killed Seattle before they could settle. Losing Breetzke, Jahangir, and Stoinis in quick succession left SO at 39/5 inside six overs. With Narine and van Schalkwyk bowling in tandem and the required rate climbing above 12 an over, there was no way back.
Match Context – Knight Riders the Team to Beat
LAKR are the only unbeaten side in MLC 2026, sitting top with 4 points and a net run rate of +2.602 that reflects the dominance of their two victories. Seattle slip to sixth in the six-team table with one win from three and a net run rate of -1.214. Two more defeats and the Orcas will be staring down elimination.
