RCB beat MI by 18 runs – IPL 2026 Match Report

12th April 2026

Royal Challengers Bengaluru 240/4 (20) beat Mumbai Indians 222/5 (20) by 18 runs

Philip Salt set the tone, Rajat Patidar went berserk in the death overs, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru posted a massive 240/4 at Wankhede. Mumbai Indians made a fist of the chase – Sherfane Rutherford’s 71 off 31 balls gave it a late twist – but they fell 18 runs short. RCB’s big-total batting depth proved the difference.

RCB Innings: 240/4 (20 overs)

Philip Salt was at his destructive best from ball one. The opener smashed 78 off 36 balls – six fours, six sixes, strike rate 216.67 – putting RCB on course for a massive total before falling caught to Hardik Pandya off Shardul Thakur at the end of the 11th over. By then, the platform was set at 120/1.

Virat Kohli played the composed partner role to perfection, making 50 off 38 balls (5 fours, 1 six) before being caught by Suryakumar Yadav off Hardik Pandya. Then Rajat Patidar took over – and the death overs were carnage. The RCB skipper blazed 53 off just 20 balls, striking at 265, with four fours and five sixes. He fell caught by Tilak Varma off Mitchell Santner but had already done the damage. Tim David finished with 34 not out off 16 to push the total to 240/4 – well above the Wankhede average first-innings score.

For MI, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the attack with 4-0-35-0 – tidy figures given the conditions. Trent Boult, Hardik Pandya and Mitchell Santner each picked up a wicket but leaked runs freely, while Mayank Markande’s two overs cost 40 runs at an economy of 20.

Mumbai Indians Chase: 222/5 (20 overs)

MI’s reply started with immediate drama. Rohit Sharma retired hurt after 19 off 13 balls – an early blow MI could ill afford. Ryan Rickelton kept things moving with 37 off 22 balls before being caught off Suyash Sharma, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

Suryakumar Yadav made 33 off 22 before being caught off Krunal Pandya at 121/4 in the 12th over, and Hardik Pandya followed for 40 off 22 balls. At 154/6 in the 16th over, the chase looked dead.

But Sherfane Rutherford had other ideas. The West Indian smashed an unbeaten 71 off 31 balls – one four, nine sixes, strike rate 229.03 – and gave MI a genuine chance in the final few overs. Mitchell Santner contributed 8 not out from the other end. Ultimately Rutherford’s late fireworks weren’t enough and MI fell 18 runs short, finishing 222/5.

Suyash Sharma was RCB’s most effective bowler with 2/47 off 4 overs, while Krunal Pandya’s 4-0-26-1 was the best economy of the RCB attack. Jacob Duffy’s four overs cost 58 and could have been more painful had MI not lost wickets.

Statz MVP: Philip Salt

Philip Salt takes the match MVP honours. His 78 off 36 was the foundation everything else was built on – the powerplay assault gave RCB the momentum that defined the entire match. With 78 performance points from runs alone (1pt per run), Salt set the tone in a game where both sides’ top scorers put in eye-catching returns.

Turning Point

Rajat Patidar’s blitz in overs 13-16 was where the match was won. RCB went from 120/1 to 194/3 in five overs of sheer carnage – Patidar’s 53 off 20 balls set a target that proved just out of MI’s reach even with Rutherford’s late heroics. The fall of Hardik Pandya’s wicket at 145 in the 15th over of the chase effectively ended MI’s realistic shot at victory.

Match Context

This result puts RCB third in the IPL 2026 standings with six points from four matches (W3 L1). Mumbai Indians remain in trouble at eighth – W1 L3, just two points from four games. The season comparison data tells the story: RCB are averaging 223.5 runs per match in 2026, conceding just 208. MI are averaging 182.8 scored and conceding 193.5.

In the H2H record, MI hold the all-time advantage at 13-11 from 24 matches (2013-2026) – but RCB are the form team right now, winning three of their last five meetings. For full player stats and projections from this match, visit Statz Cricket.
