Lucknow Super Giants beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 5 wickets – IPL 2026 Match Report

7th April 2026

Lucknow Super Giants beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 5 wickets (with 1 ball remaining) at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Dehra Dun, Uttarakhand, on 5 April 2026 in the Indian Premier League 2026 – 10th Match. Chasing 157, LSG scraped home off the penultimate ball in a nervy finish.

The Story

Sunrisers Hyderabad won the toss and batted first but were in deep trouble from ball one. Abhishek Sharma went for a golden duck in the first over, caught off Prince Yadav, and within three overs SRH had collapsed to 11/3 – Travis Head (7), Abhishek Sharma (0) and Ishan Kishan (1) all back in the pavilion. Liam Livingstone tried to rebuild from 26/4 in the seventh over but could only manage 14 off 20 before Digvesh Rathi dismissed him.

Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy then rescued SRH with a sensational fifth-wicket stand. Nitish blazed 56 off 33 (3 fours, 5 sixes) and Klaasen contributed 62 off 41 (5 fours, 2 sixes) – together adding 116 for the fifth wicket to drag SRH from 26/4 to 142. Both fell in quick succession in overs 18 and 19, and a late burst from Harshal Patel (4 off 2) lifted SRH to 156/9 from their 20 overs. Mohammed Shami was the pick of LSG’s bowlers with a stunning 2/9 from four overs at an economy of 2.25.

LSG’s chase started well as Mitchell Marsh (14) and Aiden Markram (45 off 27, 6 fours, 2 sixes) put on 37 for the first wicket. When Marsh fell to Eshan Malinga in the fifth over, and Markram was caught and bowled by Shivang Kumar for 45 in the ninth, LSG were 77/2 but Rishabh Pant had taken control. The captain ground out a vital 68 off 50 (9 fours) and was the anchor LSG needed as wickets continued to fall around him. Ayush Badoni (12 off 9), Nicholas Pooran (1 off 4) and Abdul Samad (16 off 12) all came and went, leaving LSG at 139/5 needing 18 from 14 balls. Pant and Mukul Dalip Choudhary (2*) calmly saw them home, winning with a single ball to spare.

Statz MVP: Mohammed Shami – Rating 68.6

Mohammed Shami’s 2/9 from four overs was one of the great individual bowling performances of IPL 2026 so far. An economy of 2.25 in a T20 fixture is remarkable – he was essentially unplayable in his spell, strangling the SRH top order and cutting off runs at a time when the innings was in its formative stages. His dismissal of Travis Head in the second over set the tone, and the second wicket added further punishment. Statz rewards both the wicket-taking and the economy in context, and Shami’s figures in a match where the overall economy was around 7.8 runs per over stand out dramatically. Rating 68.6 for the match-defining bowler.

Turning Point

The match turned on the extraordinary fifth-wicket partnership between Nitish Kumar Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen. SRH were sinking at 26/4 in the seventh over – a total of 156 looked barely possible from that position. The two power-hitters added 116 runs together in just over 10 overs to transform the innings. Nitish fell first (142/5, over 17.4), followed by Klaasen (144/6, over 18.1) just two balls later – the collapse of both within two balls handed LSG the momentum back. Had either stayed until the 20th over, SRH may have threatened 175+, which would likely have been beyond LSG. Instead, 156 proved just barely catchable – and Rishabh Pant made sure LSG took that chance.

Match Context

IPL 2026’s 10th match was played at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehra Dun – an increasingly popular neutral venue for IPL fixtures. Lucknow Super Giants have now shown they can win close matches under pressure, with Rishabh Pant proving his value as captain and match-winner once again. Sunrisers Hyderabad will rue their catastrophic start – losing three wickets in the first three overs against a new-ball attack of Shami’s quality in T20 cricket is almost impossible to recover from. The IPL continues to deliver heart-in-mouth finishes.
