Smeed and Overton star as Somerset cruise past Hampshire at Taunton
Somerset won by 7 wickets (with 22 balls remaining) against Hampshire in a clinical all-round display at the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton. The 6th match of 111 in the T20 Blast 2026 saw Somerset win the toss and bowl first, restrict Hampshire to 158 all out, then chase it down with nearly four overs to spare. The official Man of the Match was Will Smeed.
First Innings – Hampshire 158 all out (19.4 overs)
Hampshire got off to a decent start through Toby Albert (23 off 17, strike rate 135) and James Vince, who looked in superb touch from ball one. But Albert fell caught at 32/1 in the 4th over, and Joe Weatherley contributed just 8 off 8 before departing at 58/2 in the 8th over. Hilton Cartwright struck a brisk 15 off 9 (strike rate 167) before being bowled at 90/3 in the 10th over.
James Vince was the anchor throughout, scoring a high-class 58 off 34 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes at a strike rate of 171. He put on 60 with Cartwright and Tom Prest for the 3rd and 4th wickets before Prest fell at 117/4 in the 13th over. When Vince himself was caught at 118/5 in the same over, the innings fell apart. James Fuller made 7, Liam Dawson 8, and Scott Currie just 1 as Hampshire lost their last 5 wickets for 40 runs. Only Delano Potgieter showed any fight with 24 off 19, but he was the last man out at 158 in the 20th over.
Craig Overton was outstanding, returning 3/27 from 4 overs at an economy of 6.75. Jake Ball matched him with 3/28 from 3.4 overs at 7.64, while Daniel Sams took 2/28. A superb collective bowling effort.
Second Innings – Somerset 160/3 (16.2 overs)
The chase was barely a contest. Will Smeed came out blazing with 59 off 29 balls – 6 fours, 4 sixes, strike rate of 203. He tore the Hampshire attack apart in the powerplay and beyond. Tom Banton played the supporting role with a composed 30 off 23 (strike rate 130), and the pair put on 90 for the first wicket inside 8 overs before Banton was bowled at 90/1.
Will Smeed fell caught at 96/2 in the 9th over, but by then the hard work was done. Tom Abell was bowled cheaply for 2 at 108/3 in the 11th over, but James Rew stepped in with a commanding unbeaten 47 off 29 (4 fours, 1 six, strike rate 162) to guide Somerset home. Thomas Rew contributed a steady 14 not out alongside him.
Scott Currie was the only Hampshire bowler to make an impression, taking 2/27 from 4 overs at 6.75. Liam Dawson returned tidy figures of 1/25 at 6.25. But James Fuller went for 41 from 3 overs and Manny Lumsden conceded 19 from his solitary over as Somerset chased the target with ease.
Statz MVP – Craig Overton (100.47)
Craig Overton earns a Statz rating of 100.47 for his match-defining 3/27 from 4 overs at 6.75. His wickets came at critical moments – breaking partnerships and triggering Hampshire‘s collapse from 118/5 onwards. Statz calculates impact based on match context, and Overton’s ability to take wickets while maintaining pressure throughout earns him the top rating. Notably, this differs from the official Man of the Match, which went to Will Smeed for his explosive 59 off 29. Both performances were outstanding, but Statz rates Overton’s bowling as the more impactful contribution to the result.
