Simpson Smashes Eight Sixes as Sussex Chase Down 192 With Four Overs to Spare

Sussex won by 6 wickets (with 24 balls remaining) against Essex in the 8th match of 111 in the T20 Blast 2026 at County Ground, Chelmsford. John Simpson obliterated the Essex attack with 63 off just 23 balls, clearing the rope eight times, as Sussex cruised to 192/4 in 16 overs. (Full scorecard)

Essex Post 191/5 – But Should Have Had More

Sussex won the toss and elected to bowl, and it looked like a sharp decision early on as the seamers probed. But Michael Pepper and Paul Walter put together a brilliant opening partnership of 105 from 10.2 overs, giving Essex a commanding platform.

Pepper was bowled for 52 off 34 (five fours, three sixes, SR 153) to break the stand, and Essex wobbled badly. Matthew Critchley fell for 4 at 116/3, Walter was caught by a substitute fielder for 58 off 37 (six fours, two sixes, SR 157) at 122/3, and Wiaan Mulder managed just 2 before departing at 134/5. Four wickets fell for 29 runs – a collapse that cost Essex at least 20-30 runs.

Luc Benkenstein rescued the innings with a brilliant cameo of 36 off 18 balls, smashing four sixes at a strike rate of 200. Alongside Noah Thain (23* off 15, four fours) and Simon Harmer (10* off 7), Benkenstein dragged Essex to 191/5 – a total that looked competitive but ultimately proved well short.

James Coles was the pick of the Sussex bowlers with 2/32 from three overs. Tymal Mills was excellent at the top with 0/27 from four overs at an economy of 6.75, while Henry Crocombe (1/25) and Danny Lamb (1/25) both conceded 8.33 per over.

Sussex Demolish the Chase – 192/4 in 16 Overs

Daniel Hughes set the tone at the top, racing to 44 off 25 balls with ten fours at a strike rate of 176. He and Tom Clark (12 off 5, SR 240) put on 35 in quick time before Clark was caught in the third over. Hughes continued to punish anything short before falling caught at 80/2 in the seventh over.

Then John Simpson arrived and took the game away from Essex entirely. His 63 off 23 balls was brutal – eight sixes and a four at a strike rate of 274. He and James Coles put together a devastating partnership, adding 82 runs at a run-a-ball pace that made 192 look like a par score at best.

Coles was outstanding in his own right – 50 off 29 balls with five fours and a six (SR 172). Simpson was eventually caught at 162/3 in the 12th over, and Coles followed at 189/4 in the 16th, but by then the job was done. Tom Alsop (15* off 12) saw Sussex home with four overs to spare.

Essex’s bowlers had nowhere to hide. Wiaan Mulder conceded 36 from two overs (economy 18), Zaman Akhter went for 33 from two (economy 16.5), and even Simon Harmer (1/25 from three overs at 8.33) and Matthew Critchley (1/35 from four at 8.75) could not slow the onslaught.

Statz MVP – John Simpson (117.08)

John Simpson takes the Statz MVP award with a rating of 117.08. His 63 off 23 balls – featuring eight sixes at a strike rate of 274 – completely flipped the match. When he walked in, Sussex needed 112 from 82 balls. By the time he was dismissed, they needed just 30 from 51. Statz calculates impact based on match context, and Simpson’s acceleration through the middle overs turned a competitive chase into a procession.
